CONCERNED CITIZEN

Firstly, let’s get one thing clear, I strongly support the current strike in Botswana but I am against what the strike is doing to our country. The fact that government workers are standing up for what they believe in. I again state that, if the government can’t control the cost of leaving in its country, people/workers are entitled to strike.

With that said, I am mostly worried by the recent news that students are also on strike. They might have a good reason for striking but I am still against students striking. Moreover, it seems this strike has taken away our sense of responsibility and morality as parents. Do you know the probability of someone losing a live in a strike? Do you want your child your child to be a statistic? I guess what I am trying to say is that it is easier to manage one child than to manage a bunch, say over 2000. Take the Molepolole case for instance, where students attacked Police Officer after reportedly being shot with rubber bullets. What if the Police Officer got to a place where they felt their lives where being threatened and shot live rounds in self defence? Yes the Police Officers will face charges of killing students but are you ready to live with the burden of knowing that your child could be alive if you could have done your duty as a parent?

All that I am trying to say is that striking is a good thing but let’s not allow striking to change who we are and destroy our country. There are now reports that teachers have been killed; is that who we really are? Where is our president? Where is our cabinet? Instead of acting as individual political parties they should be acting as one, the cabinet of the Republic of Botswana. I will leave you at this, ‘what is happening to my beautiful country?’ Just a concerned citizen.
